Ceiling Fan Installation
Rated boxes, proper bracing and switching that controls the fan and the light separately.
Ceiling Fan Installation — what's involved
A ceiling fan is heavier than a light fixture and, unlike a light fixture, it moves. That combination is why fans have to hang from a box listed and marked for fan support, fixed to structure or to a brace rated for the load — not from the plastic box a builder installed for a flush light. A fan on an unrated box is the most common ceiling fan problem there is, and it announces itself as a wobble long before anything worse.
Electric Shock installs fans properly the first time: the right box, real bracing between joists where there is no beam to hit, and switching that separates the fan from the light so you are not choosing between a dark room and a still one. We also handle the harder cases — sloped and vaulted ceilings needing the correct downrod and canopy, outdoor-rated fans on covered patios, and rooms that have never had a ceiling fixture at all.

Ceiling fan work we handle
- Replacing an existing fan or light fixture with a new fan
- Installing a fan where no ceiling box exists, including the new circuit and switch
- Fan-rated boxes and expanding braces installed from below where there is no attic access
- Separate fan and light switching, or a single switch with a remote or wall control
- Sloped and vaulted ceilings with the correct downrod length and canopy
- Damp- and wet-rated fans for covered porches and patios
- Diagnosing and correcting wobble, noise and failed pull chains or receivers
The Ceiling Fan Installation process
Check what is above the ceiling
We establish whether there is a joist, a beam or nothing at all at the fan location, and whether the existing box — if there is one — is rated for fan support. This decides the whole approach.
Set a rated box with real support
A listed fan box fixed to structure, or an expanding brace installed between joists through the existing opening where there is no access from above.
Sort out the switching
If you want independent fan and light control and there is only one switch leg, we will tell you whether that needs a new conductor or is better solved with a remote or a smart control.
Hang, balance and test
The fan is assembled, hung, leveled and run at every speed to confirm it is balanced and quiet before we leave.
What you get out of it
No wobble
Nearly all fan wobble comes from the mount rather than the blades. Correct support removes it permanently.
Independent control
Separate fan and light switching is the difference between a fan you use and a fan you leave off.
Rated for where it hangs
Covered outdoor locations need damp- or wet-rated equipment. An indoor fan on a porch corrodes from the inside.
