New Construction Wiring

Temporary power through rough-in to trim-out, on the general contractor's programme.

Overview

New Construction Wiring — what's involved

On a new build the electrical contractor is on site three separate times — temporary power at the start, rough-in once the frame is up and the roof is on, and trim-out at the end — and each visit has to land in the right window. Rough-in that is late holds up insulation and drywall and pushes every trade behind it; rough-in that is done badly is discovered at trim-out when the walls are closed.

Electric Shock takes on full electrical packages for new homes, additions and light commercial construction: temporary power, the permanent service, complete rough-in, and the finish work. The part worth investing in is the planning conversation before rough-in — receptacle placement, switching, lighting layout and provision for things like a future charger or a finished basement are nearly free while the walls are open and expensive forever afterwards.

Included

The new construction package

  • Temporary construction power, with GFCI protection for the other trades
  • Permanent service, meter equipment and panel, coordinated with the utility
  • Complete branch circuit rough-in, boxes, and recessed housings set in open framing
  • Low-voltage and structured cabling rough-in for data, cameras and access points
  • Provision for future loads — charger circuits, sub-panels, basement finishing
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm systems, interconnected to code
  • Complete trim-out: devices, fixtures, panel schedule and testing
  • Rough and final inspection coordination with the building department
How it works

The New Construction Wiring process

  1. Temporary power

A temporary service so the other trades can work, with proper GFCI protection and a layout that suits the site rather than the first convenient post.

  2. The pre-rough-in walk

We walk the framed shell with you and mark device and fixture positions on the studs. An hour here prevents most of the regrets people have about a finished house.

  3. Rough-in to the programme

Service, panel, boxes, circuits and housings installed in the window between framing and insulation, so nothing behind us is held up.

  4. Rough inspection

Inspected while everything is visible. Anything the inspector raises is corrected before the walls close, which is the entire point of the sequence.

  5. Trim-out and final

Devices, fixtures and equipment connected, the panel schedule completed, everything tested, and the final inspection scheduled.

Why it matters

What you get out of it

  • Decisions made while they are free

An extra circuit, a conduit to the garage or a switch in a better place costs almost nothing before drywall.

  • Programme kept

Rough-in landing in its window is what keeps insulation, drywall and every following trade on schedule.

  • Provision for later

Charger circuits, basement sub-panels and data conduit roughed in now save opening a finished house later.

Questions

New Construction questions

Still not sure? Send us the details and we'll give you a straight answer before anything is booked.

When do you need to be on site?
Three times: temporary power before the trades arrive, rough-in after the frame and roof are complete and before insulation, and trim-out after finishes. We work to the general contractor's programme for all three.
What should I decide before rough-in?
Receptacle and switch locations, the lighting plan, where televisions and desks will go, and any future provision — a charger, a basement, a workshop, a hot tub. All of it is inexpensive before drywall and disruptive afterwards.
Do you work with builders and general contractors directly?
Yes. New construction and additions are normally contracted through the builder, and we work to the construction programme and the drawing set.
