Electrical Repairs

Failed devices, damaged cable, bad splices and burned terminations, put right properly.

Overview

Electrical Repairs — what's involved

Repair work is where most of an electrician's week goes, and the repairs that matter are rarely dramatic. A backstabbed receptacle that has been carrying a space heater for six winters, a wire nut that was never quite tight, a splice made outside a box and buried in insulation, a cable stapled through by a picture hook — these are the things that quietly heat up and eventually fail.

Electric Shock repairs the fault and, where it points at a pattern, tells you about the pattern. If one receptacle failed because it was backstabbed and the whole house was wired that way, you should know that, even though the immediate repair is one device. We would rather give you the real picture than sell the same repair six times.

How it works

The Electrical Repairs process

  1. Confirm the fault

We verify what has failed and why before replacing anything — a device that burned because of a loose connection will burn again if only the device is changed.

  2. Make it safe first

If the circuit is unsafe to energize, it gets isolated and clearly identified before any other work happens.

  3. Repair to current standard

Repairs are made to the standard the work would be held to today — correct terminations, listed connectors, accessible boxes, appropriate protection.

  4. Tell you what we found

If the repair revealed something systemic, you get told, with a clear distinction between what needs doing now and what can wait.

Why it matters

What you get out of it

  • Repairs that hold

Fixing the termination rather than swapping the component is what stops the same fault coming back next year.

  • Honest triage

Urgent, soon and eventually are three different categories, and you get told which one you are in.

  • Past work corrected

Buried junction boxes and improvised splices left by someone else are a common find in older homes and straightforward to put right.

Questions

Electrical Repairs questions

Still not sure? Send us the details and we'll give you a straight answer before anything is booked.

What is a backstabbed receptacle?
A receptacle wired by pushing the conductor into a hole in the back rather than wrapping it around the screw terminal. It is faster to install and makes contact over a much smaller area, which means it runs warmer and loosens over time. It is a very common cause of failed outlets in homes built from the 1970s onward.
Do I need to fix work a previous owner did themselves?
It depends what they did. Some DIY work is perfectly sound. Buried junction boxes, missing grounds, undersized conductors and outdoor-rated equipment used indoors — or the reverse — are worth correcting, and an inspection will tell you which category yours falls into.
Can you repair aluminum branch wiring?
Aluminum branch circuits are generally remediated rather than removed, using listed connectors at every device and splice to give a reliable aluminum-to-copper transition. Full replacement is an option but is usually a rewire-scale job.
