Lighting

Outdoor & Landscape Lighting

Paths, facades, trees and entries lit deliberately — and wired for weather.

Overview

Outdoor & Landscape Lighting — what's involved

Exterior lighting does three different jobs — finding your way, seeing the house, and seeing anyone approaching it — and they want different fixtures in different places. Path lighting at low level, uplights against a facade or into a tree canopy, downlights in a soffit, and security lighting aimed so it illuminates the approach rather than blinding everyone using it.

Outdoors, the wiring matters more than the fixtures. Everything is GFCI-protected, receptacles are weather-resistant in in-use covers, buried runs are at proper depth in the right wiring method, and fixtures are rated for wet locations rather than damp. Electric Shock installs both line-voltage exterior lighting and low-voltage landscape systems with their transformers and zones.

How it works

The Outdoor & Landscape Lighting process

  1. Walk the property after dark

Exterior lighting can only be planned at night. We look at what is already lit by streetlights and neighbors, where the dark approaches are, and what is actually worth lighting.

  2. Plan routes and zones

Cable routes are planned around planting, irrigation and future digging, and grouped into zones that can be switched or timed separately.

  3. Wire for the environment

Wet-rated fixtures, GFCI protection, in-use covers, and buried cable at the correct depth in the correct method. Outdoor wiring fails at the terminations, so that is where the care goes.

  4. Aim it at night

Uplights and security fixtures are aimed after dark, which is the only time you can see what they are doing. Glare into windows and at the street is what aiming fixes.

Why it matters

What you get out of it

  • Safe footing

Lit steps, paths and grade changes are the practical half of exterior lighting, and the half insurers care about.

  • The house at night

Facade and tree uplighting changes how the property reads from the street far more than most interior work does.

  • Wired to last outdoors

Correct ratings, protected circuits and proper burial are what separate a system that works in five years from one that trips every time it rains.

Questions

Outdoor Lighting questions

Still not sure? Send us the details and we'll give you a straight answer before anything is booked.

Low-voltage or line-voltage?
Low-voltage suits landscape work — path lights, uplights, anything in planting beds — because the cable is easier to route and safer around digging. Line-voltage suits fixtures mounted on the building: soffit lights, lanterns, security floods. Most properties end up with both.
Why does my outdoor GFCI trip whenever it rains?
Water in a receptacle, a fixture or a splice. Very often it is a receptacle with a flat weatherproof cover rather than an in-use cover, or a fixture that is damp-rated being used somewhere genuinely wet. It is a real fault, not a nuisance, and it is worth tracing.
Can lighting be added to an established garden without wrecking it?
Largely, yes. Low-voltage cable is buried shallowly and routed along bed edges and under mulch, so most of a run can be installed with a spade rather than a trencher.
